An Overview Of The Types Of Garage Doors Available

There are three basic types of garage doors, although there are many variations of the types. They are sectional, tilt-up, and swing hung. The kind you select will have to do with your budget, your climate, and the design of your home. The length of your driveway may also play a factor in your decision.

The sectional style is comprised of strips, usually four that fold up as the door is opened. This is the most popular style for use with an automatic garage door opener. It takes up less space on the garage ceiling, and less driveway space to open or close. This means that the car may be parked within inches of the door. Also, in climates where winter may bring snow and ice, these doors do not need drifts to be cleared to operate.

The tilt-up door consists of one solid panel. It swings out first, and then up. This means that it needs more clearance than a sectional style. These doors are not as suitable for short driveways or climates where snow can accumulate in front of it. They are less expensive than sectional doors, costing one-fourth to one-third less.

A swing hung, or side hung door operates like a regular door. It does not fit into the ceiling of the garage but stands to the side when open. It therefore needs more space, both in front and through the arc of its path. This may be problematic when it snows. This door style is not suited for automatic openers.

All three types of doors can be found in steel, wood, or plastic. Wood doors are usually the most expensive and require the most maintenance. They need to be painted more frequently and can rot, particularly along the bottom. Plastic doors are lightweight and quiet, but not all of them can be painted. Steel doors are sturdy, can be painted, and are usually embossed to add a wood grain finish to them.

Windows can be added to doors regardless of the style or material chosen. They will, of course, increase the price, but can provide an architectural charm missing with a plain door. For homeowners who are often in their garage, the extra light may be beneficial.

Insulated doors in various degrees of insulating properties are available in all styles. They are especially popular in colder climates, but also for garages that have rooms above. Houses with attached garages can also benefit from the insulation.

With all of the types of garage doors on the market, a homeowner can easily find several excellent choices. The options, materials, and styles offered mean that it is not difficult to find a functional and attractive garage door to match the architecture of any home.
