Often times people leave the garage out when getting a system for home security. Even if you have a garage that is away from the house you need to provide garage security. An attached garage requires even more security. The security of your garage should be just as important as the security of your home’s main door. Should thieves get in your attached garage they can easily get into the house. The items inside your garage should be as valuable as the things inside your house. There are things besides your car that would cost a great deal to replace.
Garages are a favorite target of thieves because the items stored in them are easy to pawn. They will take tools or bicycles and a favorite is lawn mowers and other lawn equipment. Never think you can get away with not having a secure garage.
Garages with remote openers are much harder to break into than ones that do not have them. Panels must be secure on the doors and the corners can have no gaps or a resourceful thief can pry the door open and squeeze in. Most of the time a thief will go elsewhere if you have an automatic garage door.
However, if you do have a garage door opener make sure to change the manufacturers setting for extra security. Open the lid off the remote for the door. Inside you will see a row of about 10 switches. In most cases all but one will be going the same direction. A thief can easily break the code and get in. Make the switch combination a little more challenging by using a toothpick to change them. After you do the remote you will have to get into the box above the door and make them match.
Should your garage have a door that goes outside and windows always be sure to keep them locked. Never leave your door open for a long period of time. Only open it to put the car in and out. It is too easy for a thief when they know what is in the garage and exactly where it is. They just take minutes to get in and take what they want.
Unplug the garage door opener if you are leaving the house for several days or weeks. It is much harder for a thief to gain access to a garage when the door can not be opened because it is unplugged. If you keep your remote on the sun visor of your car never leave the car unlocked in the driveway. It is just too inviting for a thief to take it then come back at night and rob you. If you see the remote has gone missing close the garage door and unplug the door. Plug it back in when you get another opener and always altar the settings.
Remember that garage security is imperative to the safety of your house or your own safety. Thieves can gain access to your house through the garage or they can lay in wait to surprise you. If you have a home security system be sure to include the doors and windows of the garage and always provide a light outside the garage to increase security. A light that will detect motion is the most reliable when it comes to security.
