Determine whether the garage door is wood or steel. There is a wide variety of styles. With new models, panels with hinges are used so they can roll up or down. Have someone assist you with repairing the spring system since it is dangerous and difficult. The helper can hold up the door or it can prop up with 2 x 4s. Placing an item underneath the door to catch it if it falls is also wise. Another safety precaution is running cables through the middle of the coil spring. Old springs may break without giving any warning. Read the owners manual to ensure proper spring tension. It will make sure that the door is working right.

1.)To help with getting the proper replacement spring, look for a colored paint on the end of the spring or hold on to it for comparison. The colored paint is used to indicate the size and weight of the door. New springs will have the same color.

2.)Springs come with single or double hooped ends. Double hoops a more difficult to work with.

3.)For garage door openers pull the emergency release for manual operation.

4.)Fasten the spring end to the hook or pulley clip. For double hoops, use a screwdriver to create a gap between the hoops and get it on the pulley clip.

5.)Before connecting the other end, the line or metal cable needs to be all the way in the pulley wheels. Connecting the opposite end of the spring places the pulley and cable in the proper position. If you have trouble with this step, open the door a little more and have your helper pull on the spring using a chain or metal line.

6.) Take away whatever was holding the door open, bring the door down and re-engaged the emergency release handle. Check the door to make sure it operates right by coming in complete contact with ground easily.

Fixing a crooked door.

1.)Place a vice grip over the bottom roller and on the flat portion of the track on the side of the door that is higher. This will keep it from going up more.

2.)Use another vice grip on the other side of the door and with your free hand, lift that it until both sides are even. Put that vice grip in the same position as the other on so the door will not fall.

3.)Use a ladder to be able to reach above the door. When looking above the door, you should see a cable that is unwound. Rewind it. The beginning of the cable has to be wound into the first groove that is closest to the track. After that, the cable can wind in any order as long as it is on the drum or spool. If you cannot completely wind the cable, lift the door higher, apply vice grips again and try to wind it then.

4.) With that done, check to make sure the rollers on in the track. If they are not, force them back in. Look to make sure the tracks are straight. Release the vice grips. The door should work correctly.
