Garage doors are made from a variety of materials including fiberglass, wood and metal. These doors can be plain or decorative. Regardless of what style they are, having good springs is what makes them work. According to Minneapolis Garage Door Repair specialists, any time a garage door is worked on, the individual should always watch out for the springs. A quick release of these springs can cause an injury.
Overtime, the springs and cables on garage doors begin to stretch which creates an out of balance door that can be dangerous. Normally, the door closing to quickly, endangering anything in its path is the result. Damage to the door or a shoulder can result if the door opens to quickly. A door that is balanced right will stay in position when there is a three to four foot opening. The door should also close and open gently. If the door shuts hard or bounces back open, the spring tension needs to be adjusted.
A guide is listed to aid in solving the out of balance issue.
1.) Start with opening the door about three feet off the ground. Lift the door up and down until a point is found where it remains in place. If the point results in a gap of more than three to four feet, the springs or cables need to be adjusted.
2.) To relieve pressure from the springs, prop the door open with a ladder to keep it from falling while you are working on it. You can also use C clamps on the door track if you do not have a ladder or if it is not tall enough.
3.) The spring should be completely compressed and then taken out of the track. Relocate the spring to the next higher hole if the door was closing too quickly. Relocate it to the next lower hole if it opened to quickly. Make sure to relocate the spring on the other side as well and retest the door.
4.) Using a level, make sure that both sides of the door are even when it closes. If not, readjust the springs.
5.) Minute fixes may be required. If this is the case, made adjustments to the cable and not the springs. Since the cables are joined to the door by S springs that are attached to the track support, the S spring will have to be removed. The cable may need to be tightened or loosened depending on the problem.
