Taking Care Of Your Garage System

Garage doors are a luxury of life. Everyone that has a garage with a garage door opening system would agree that it is quite nice to be able to park your car into a safe, enclosed location. This luxury can sometimes become a nightmare when the garage door system fails or breaks. Many people want to save money so they wonder what they can do to fix it.

If something is broken or needs repair, most likely you can do it yourself. The very first thing to do when a garage door system starts having problems is to find a garage door diagram. This diagram will show you all of the elements of the garage door and help you to pinpoint the problem areas while also helping you understand how it comes apart.

Second, is to inspect the garage door opener motor. This is the primary thing that goes bad on a garage door system. Garage door openers are under large amounts of stress as they lift and lower a very heavy door. Often the sprocket will loosen up, the motor will just give out, or the motor will start to slip. If these things are happening, it’s time to replace the motor.

Garage springs are the next big item that usually go bad after a couple of years. Springs are extremely dangerous and are under huge amounts of stress and tension. Do not attempt to replace these yourself. Please call someone who is a professional to come out and replace them. People get hurt every year due to spring related accidents.

The last thing to check on your garage door is the chain. Chains loosen over time as the garage door is opened and closed everyday. Simply tightening the chain spring holder at the top of the door, will help save the motor from slipping or putting too much pressure on itself when opening or shutting the garage door.

Most garage parts, except the springs, can be bought at any local hardware store. Do it yourself repairs are easy if you buy parts from Home Depot or other stores because they usually have people there that can give you step by step instructions on how to replace the bad parts in your garage door system.
