If you contract with a person who holds himself out as a general contractor but he is not you will have trouble suing him. You see if the guy is not a contractor then the licensing board will not help you out. But if you hire a licensed contractor it is the boards duty to make sure he does the job correctly.

The state will require the contractor to make his work right. But if you hire a non licensed contractor you are on your own. You will also want to make sure the contractor has the proper workers compensation for all his workers. If there is an accident or injury on your property you want the state to take care of it rather than your home owners insurance company to be sued.

Run a check on your contractor to be extra sure. It takes time and money but it will give you peace of mind. Some look for a criminal past. Some even look to see if he has any sex offenses. People who have family at home like to be certain of who is on their property during the work day.

And if he does he needs to provide evidence of workers compensation insurance for the subcontractors. You also want to run a criminal background check on him to make sure you and your family and your personal property is safe. Some even like doing a sex offender search on contractors to be certain their family will be safe.

You cannot have this. The contractor that is not on the job cannot know if the work is done right or not. You also have to know if he will arrange for the permits. If you do not get a permit for the work you will not be able to claim the extra work when you sell the property.

And do not pay all of the bill up front. If you pay the whole price before he finishes he will leave and go to the next job before finishing your job. Garage installation is an important job. You need to go with a professional for the right job done the right way.
